As soon as someone mentions any kind of bug, whether it is cockroaches, spiders or termites everyone thinks that you are dirty. In fact some bugs love nothing more than a clean house to live in.

The mistake people make when dealing with bugs is that they only do anything about them once they know they have a problem. There is nothing worse than seeing that first cockroach run across the kitchen floor, so make sure it doesn't happen.

Different parts of the world have different bugs and different problems, I will never forget the size of the roaches in Durban. The roaches in the desert areas of America get pretty large as well.

Pest control in Utah is a big business because the weather is so good in the southern part of the state. If you are in New Mexico or Texas you would probably have to worry about scorpions as well as roaches and spiders.

The question people always ask is "what can I do to stop bugs infesting my house?"

• Don't leave food lying around- bugs love crumbs,spilled sugar and anything that is open and easily accessible
• Eat at the dinner table - I don't mean to sound like your mum but the fact is that when we eat in front of the TV we tend to spill a few bits and while it may seem to be a tiny amount it will attract roaches.
• Fix holes - Mice only need 1/4 inch gap to get into your house. Cockroaches can get under any door if you have the slightest gap.
• Keep your house clean and dry. Many bugs love damp areas

When you think about pests you normally think about roaches and while they are nasty little things (or not so little), No one should ever discount just how much damage mice and rats can do to your home.

Mice and rate urine and feces pass along many different diseases, rats continually urinate and then use that as a guide to get back to their nest. Mouse droppings can be hardly noticeable until there are so many that it will be a tough job to get rid of them.

I have often heard people say that they have cats to keep the mice away, not all cats will chase every mouse they see. We feed them to well! You can of course buy many different types of traps for any rodents but it really does make sense to ask an expert for their opinion as they have years of experience with it.

I once spent nearly $50 on products from the local DIY store and still had a problem, the local exterminator came round charged me $45 and fixed my issue. Trying to be cheap and save myself money was actually a waste of time in this instance and it did not help me at all.

One of the questions I have had asked is whether a local bug controller is better than a national company. There is no easy answer to that one. National companies have training programs and they will have process's in place to check their teams work.

A local company may well know your local area bugs better, the operator will normally be someone who lives in the area and they have probably seen the nasties that are bothering you before. This prior knowledge can save them time and that alone will save you money.
